Curiosity may have killed the cat...but I'll take my chances darling.
I'm just wondering- what's the "normal" procedure for names on LJ? Just user name, or the usual author name (If it's different), etc?

And what would you like to be called? Any preferences-- real life name, nickname, just user name, etc.?

For me,[info]absitively  or A is fine. Not that I don't like my real name or anything, but on-line = fast&easy is better, right?

To be honest, I bet it all just depends on the person. I don't really mind what I'm called, whether it be just SJ or the full [info]sunnyjune46 . . . some people I think don't like their real names to be used, so I go with whatever their LJ name is (without the coding) unless I know of a shorter nickname.

That's what I thought (um, the fact that most people go by the username unless otherwise dictated), but I wasn't sure, and was curious to see what teh flist thought. Because you are all so much wiser, no?

Your call is as good as mine in this crazy, mixed up LJ world. :-)

The internets is way over my head over some of the "netiquette" rules, so I thought I'd make sure with some more experienced peeps here in LJ-land.

Hm...well, for me, when it comes to reccing a fic or fanart, I credit the author's username/pen name. If I'm talking about them as a writer or fanartist, I use their user name. But if I'm just talking TO them, I use their name :D

Amyway, just Leila is fine! Applecede's kinda weird to be called haha :P

That's what I thought the standard was, but then I see fics being recced by the author's real name as well, so I was a little quibbly then.
With the naming thing, I don't want to be too foward, as I know some people don't like being called by their real name on-line, so I really do want to make sure.
I have to say, absitively isn't exactly the most normal of names either.

On LJ I tend to always use usernames, mostly so other people have a better chance of knowing who I'm talking about. If they're on LJ and they're using a different pen-name I would personally be confused if the different pen-name was used. Same if real name is used instead of user-name. I don't know the real names of everybody on my flist, so if someone were to make a post saying 'Tina said such and such, isn't she wonderful', the only reaction it would get from me was wondering who Tina was and conclude that it probably wasn't someone I knew.

I don't think my real name is any business of fandom's, and never use it on LJ or elsewhere except in private emails to people I know well, and the people who know my real name don't call me by it other places than private emails.

On LJ, I think there is a tendency to just use usernames, especially for more fandom-ish things like fic reccing, etc. I have seen some fics where it's "blahblahblah by Isabel" though, so I wasn't sure if this was something I hadn't noticed before or whatnot. Personally, for fics and authors, I prefer the username so I can always go to check out the author's journal for other fics by them if I really enjoyed that one. It's just more convenient that way.

Me too. Besides, if the other person is active and known on LJ it would just seem weird and backwards to use a different archive name for them.

It causes a lot of confusion when authors use more than one pen name, so with the exchange all entries are memory'd under the most commonly used pen name for that author.

I must say I've never quite managed to understand why people would want to use more than one online name. At least not in the same fandom. When I changed my username to what it is now (way back when) I still had fics uploaded to archives here and there and had to change them all to a new account. While that was going on I put up several 'I'm still me!' messages, in case anybody should see the reposting and think I was plagiarising myself.

(I would also say that if someone had more than one pen name and they went to participate in an exchange, it would only be polite of them to point out which name they wanted used... Or mention which other names they used so that people would know who they were.)

Putting everything under one username is really the most efficient way of grouping fics- not to mention, in the long run, it cuts down on the plagarizm problem because it's always under one name on any archive.
However, I find it confusing if the LJ username and the regular penname is different. Padfoot the Maruader comes to mind. On ff.net, aff.com, etc. she's under her penname, and that's how she credits herself most of the time. But, on the other hand, her LJ username is [info]faintingfancy, so it's hard sometimes to actually determine who someone is writing about depending on which one they use.

I'll use the username (sometimes abbreviating is), or first name if the person is okay with it being used publicly.

I don't mind if people call me by my username or G, but for anything official (like as a mod, or noting I made something) then I'd like my username to be used.

I love your name! It's been a regular on my list of favorite names.

That's what I thought would be the case, but I do see some people being listed under a real name or another penname and I find it rather confusing exactly which the proper procedure was.

Thank you! (my real name, right?)
